When the Red Hall and Lingfield by-election was called, the narrative from our opponents was loud and relentless. Every party was lining up to declare the Conservatives finished. Reform, in particular, revelled in it, pumping out post after post celebrating what they claimed was our political demise.
Tonight, that narrative collapsed.
The Conservatives secured second place in the Red Hall and Lingfield by-election, decisively proving that talk of our extinction was wildly premature. Not only that, Reform significantly underperformed compared to their results elsewhere across the North East. Despite their confidence and constant self-promotion, they failed to come anywhere near 50 per cent of the vote, securing just 37.5 per cent.
This result speaks volumes. Even in a ward that Reform confidently claimed they could not lose, a clear majority of voters could not bring themselves to support them. The idea that this was a coronation was exposed as fantasy.
The moment was telling on the night itself. It is customary for the winning party to cheer and celebrate their victory. Reform barely mustered a whimper. The bravado of the campaign vanished the moment the numbers were read out.
Above all, this result reflects the strength of our candidate. Huge thanks go to Kyle Bartch, an excellent local candidate, a local lad focused on community issues rather than national theatrics. Kyle will stand again, and this result shows there is a solid foundation to build on.
The Conservatives are still here. Still fighting. And very much not done.
